Prefectural governors from northern Japan have decided to make an emergency appeal to the government for greater assistance in their efforts to deal with the growing threat being posed by wild bears.

Japan deployed troops to the country's rugged north on Wednesday to help trap bears after local authorities said besieged communities were struggling to cope with an unprecedented wave of attacks.
