New Jersey and Virginia have a long standing pattern of electing governors from the party opposite from the sitting president.

Election Day 2025 is here, with consequential races in New York City, New Jersey, Virginia and a redistricting ballot measure in California.

Democrats have shown up in greater numbers than Republicans in early voting as a close race for governor between Mikie Sherrill and Jack Ciattarelli comes to a close.

"We are the ones that have done a great job on affordability... but we just lost an election, they said, based on affordability," Trump said Nov. 6.

High-profile races are unfolding across the country on Tuesday, including New York City's mayoral election and governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia.In California, voters will consider a ballot measure that puts forth a redrawn congressional map that could net Democrats five House seats.

All eyes are on New Jersey and Virginia this week, where gubernatorial contests could show which party has the edge.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin feels confident about Tuesday’s gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, arguing Democrats have the momentum coming off of a series of overperformances in special elections this year.

While other Democrats have tried to address their party’s failings with new strategies, Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey are hoping to once again tap into anger at the president.
