The nation’s biggest city will pick its next mayor on Tuesday in an election that has sparked debate over the future of the Democratic Party. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assembly member and democratic socialist who jolted the party with his victory in the New York City primary in June,

Officials say it’s the highest turnout for a non-presidential election year in city history and four times higher than the early vote count during the 2021 mayoral race.

Democrats celebrated several notable wins after Tuesday’s elections. Major victories include governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, a major ballot initiative in California, and the mayoral contest in New York City. Jimmy Kimmel was happy with the results, saying “we needed a big night.”

Democrats dominated the first major Election Day since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, with major wins in New York City, New Jersey, Virginia and on the Prop 50 California redistricting vote.

Voters across the country are heading to the polls today for a slew of key off-cycle races, including governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia and the New York City mayoral election.
