National figures are competing in different ways to make Mamdani a Democratic symbol amid a consequential next chapter of his rise: running New York City.

After Zohran Mamdani successfully completed his historic bid for mayor of the country's largest city on Tuesday night, he was joined onstage by his wife Rama Duwaji. In his speech, Mamdani thanked Duwaji, saying, "There is no one I would rather have by my side in this moment and in every moment."

The banking giant’s C.E.O. said he wanted to keep lines of communication open with the mayor-elect of New York.

More than 1 million New Yorkers voted for Zohran Mamdani, and about 10% of them were his own campaign volunteers. CBS News New York's Ali Bauman looks at how the candidate was able to mobilize first-time voters.
