Formed in 1934, Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys mixed hot fiddle swing with big band flair. From Tulsa’s Cain’s Ballroom, they made “San Antonio Rose” and “New Spanish Two Step” Texas dancehall anthems. With Wills’ trademark hollers and Tommy Duncan’s smooth vocals, they turned Western swing into a national craze and kept the dance floors packed clear through the ’40s.
