Today's focus on our Hyde Hall gardening team for #NationalGardeningWeek is all about pollarding willow! Here Sarah is coppicing Salix alba var. vitellina 'Britzensis' (m). Each spring, we pollard our living willow sculptures. Pollarding the willows annually in this way produces 1 years growth - new stems are then young, colourful & pliable to sculpt with the following winter. | RHS Garden Hyde Hall

Ordinarily, once pollarded the willow sculptures are used for display purposes elsewhere in the garden or chipped and added to our compost. This year we've tried something new and repurposed the sculptures, creating habitat towers for wildlife. As we've cut back in the Winter Garden, we've filled the structures with seed heads, grasses & stems. We hope to see birds, small mammals, insects and maybe even fungi use these creations as their homes! #NationalGardeningWeek | RHS Garden Hyde Hall
