Thompson Test for Achilles Tendon Rupture Before we move away from the Achilles tendon, let's look at the most extreme case of tendon pathology: ruptures! The Thompson Test is a quick, easy, and very accurate test for Achilles tendon rupture. According to Maffuli et al. (1998), it has a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 93%, which makes it a great test to rule out and confirm an Achilles tendon rupture. Orthopaedic Trauma on Instagram: "People always ask “How do you know an ankle is unstable?” We assess that with an external rotation test like above. If an ankle is unstable it usually needs surgery. If it’s stable, it doesn’t need surgery and will heal ok on its own. As mentioned before, another way is to have the patient stress it by walking on it. So if they have been walking on it for a few days, and there’s no talar shift on X-rays, then it’s stable. Used with patient permission #orthotraum
