Historic Locomotive 44871 Captivates As It Passes Through Newton On Ayr. The historic steam engine 44871, a magnificent example of Britain's rich railway heritage, was filmed today as it made its way through Newton on Ayr, delighting rail enthusiasts and spectators with its timeless allure. Known affectionately as the Black 5 or Class 5 Mixed Traffic, this locomotive was designed by Sir William Stanier for the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) and first hit the tracks in September 1934.
