In awareness meditation, one learns to stay open-hearted and witness everything that arises. It might be a moment of joy or a feeling of deep sorrow. The practice is to observe without reacting, holding on, or trying to change anything. It takes courage to stay open in the face of whatever comes. As we do this, the cycle of life and rebirth naturally begins to unravel. This leads to awakening, where we begin to see the truth of ourselves and existence.
