Bayard Rustin, Civil Rights Activist born in West Chester, PA Bayard Rustin was an American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He was a key adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s. He attended Cheney University of Pennsylvania, a historically black college. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
