It was amazing finally getting to visit Carlisle Castle and getting to explore it. Although (for obvious reasons) there is a focus on the military history which I could give two hoots about (sorry not sorry) it was still well worth the visit. It’s an amazing building with so much history! The Dungeons at Carlisle Castle Walking into the keep at Carlisle Castle and into the dark and dingy cellar which was used as a dungeon. This is one of the locations which held Jacobite prisoners awaiting, trial. During the hot summer of 1746, around 90 prisoners were crammed into this small place. Prisoners licked the stones out of desperation for the moisture they provided. 33 Jacobites were later hanged at Carlisle, with the majority of prisoners facing transportation to America. #cumbria #bo
