November 15th - on this day in 1988, the Soviet spaceplane Buran undertook its only orbital flight. Powered by the enormous Energia rocket, the uncrewed test flight lifted off from Site 110/37 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Soviet Space Shuttle Buran "Buran" was the Soviet equivalent of the US Space Shuttle. Only one Buran orbiter was ever made. It completed a single unmanned orbital flight in 1988. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the program was cancelled, and the former Soviet Space Shuttle stood derelict in a hangar at the Bakinour Cosmodrome (Kazahkstan).
